SAN FRANCISCO — Logan Webb pitched eight scoreless innings, matching his season high, but the Giants lost to the San Diego Padres, 1-0, in 10 innings on Monday at Oracle Park as the offense failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities with runners in scoring position.
The Padres scored the ballgame’s first run of the night in the bottom of the 10th inning when Jose Iglesias drove in Jake Cronenworth — the automatic runner — with a sacrifice fly off Ryan Walker, putting the Giants in a 1-0 deficit.
The Giants began the bottom of the 10th with Jung Hoo Lee as the automatic runner on second base. Lee advanced to third base on a perfect sacrifice bunt from Christian Koss, putting the tying run 90 feet away.
With one out, Matt Chapman hit a hot shot to third baseman Jose Iglesias, who shared the grounder and threw to first for the inning’s second out. Jerar Encarnacion, activated from the injured list prior to the game, hit a two-out screamer right at first baseman Luis Arraez, ending the ballgame.
Webb was the beneficiary of some excellent defense. In the second, Webb struck out Tyler Wade with a changeup, then catcher Patrick Bailey threw out Jake Cronenworth trying to steal second base. In the top of the seventh, third baseman Matt Chapman made a leaping catch to take a hit away from Cronenworth.
The game got a bit chippy in the early frames. In the bottom of the second, the Padres’ Stephen Kolek drilled LaMonte Wade Jr.’s right hand with an errant 95 mph four-seam fastball. Wade remained in the ballgame and ran for himself, but Casey Schmitt replaced him at first base in the top of the third.
That same frame, Webb hit San Diego’s Elias Díaz with a 91.7 mph sinker that ran too far inside. In the bottom of the third, Kolek hit Wilmer Flores with a 94.3 mph four-seam fastball, the evening’s third hit batter. Kolek immediately made the “my bad” gesture by patting the center of his chest, but Flores still had some words for San Diego’s starter.
The Giants had more than their share of opportunities to push across the game’s first run.
San Francisco loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but ended that inning empty handed; the Padres got the force out at home on Tyler Fitzgerald’s grounder to third, then Heliot Ramos hit into an inning-ending double play.
In the sixth with two outs and a runner on second base, Padres manager Mike Shildt brought in left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon to face the left-handed hitting Mike Yastrzemski. Manager Bob Melvin, in turn, pinch-hit Yastrzemski for Encarnacion, but Encarnacion ground out to end the inning.
The Giants had another great opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases for Jung Hoo Lee, but the Padres’ Jeremiah Estrada struck out Lee on three pitches to escape the danger.
Flores led off the bottom of the eighth with a bloop single and was replaced by pinch-runner Christian Koss, who put himself in scoring position by stealing second base. The Giants ended up with runners at second and third with two outs — Chapman and Encarnacion struck out, Willy Adames was intentionally walked, then Jason Adam threw a wild pitch — but couldn’t cash in as Schmitt struck out swinging.
