Severe Storms Imminent in Palm Beach County and South Florida

By Kimberly Miller | The Palm Beach Post

South Florida may be facing another round of severe storms on Monday afternoon, May 5, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami. Forecasters highlight a marginal threat—the lowest on NWS’s five-point scale—for areas from Lake Okeechobee south and eastward, including Palm Beach County.

Thunderstorm Risks

Despite the low threat level, cold air aloft could strengthen thunderstorms, potentially bringing gusts up to 58 mph and very large hail. An isolated tornado is also possible, especially along the sea breeze front, forecasters said in their early morning update.

Rainfall and Flooding

While much of South Florida may receive under half an inch of rain, some isolated areas could see 2 to 3 inches in stronger storms. Palm Beach International Airport recorded 0.21 inches on Sunday.

Localized flooding is possible where rain is heaviest. Even modest rainfall will help alleviate the region’s ongoing extreme drought, which is the most extensive since 2011.

Rain Forecast

  • Monday: 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms
  • Tuesday: Rain chances drop to 30%
  • Wednesday & Thursday: Drier weather expected
  • Late week: Temperatures could climb close to 90°F
