Amy Galpin: Directs Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art and Design

Since joining Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) in February 2024 as executive director and chief curator, Dr. Amy Galpin has been working towards raising the profile of the institution and enhancing the accessibility of its programs and collections.

Dr. Galpin oversees all museum operations and activities while nurturing relationships with established and emerging community members, sponsors, donors, and the Greater Miami visual arts community. She will also oversee the MDC Special Collections and the Kislak Center inside the Historic Landmark the Freedom Tower, which is set to reopen in September and celebrate its centennial.

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Galpin was the chief curator of the Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, a curator at Rollins Museum of Art, and an associate curator of Art of the Americas at the San Diego Museum of Art.

At the Frost Art Museum, she curated group exhibitions, such as In the Mind’s Eye: Landscapes of Cuba and Cut: Abstraction in the US from the 1970s to the Present, and solo projects with artists Rafael Soldi, Liu Shiyuan, and Peggy Levison Nolan.

At Rollins Museum, she organized solo exhibitions with Patrick Martínez, Jamilah Sabur, and Jess Dugan and curated the group exhibition “Displacement: Symbols and Journeys.” At both institutions, she enthusiastically engaged with students and faculty on varied initiatives, including curating exhibitions, and taught courses on modern and contemporary art and museum studies.

Dr. Galpin has a track record of community engagement in Miami, having collaborated with partners such as the Miami-Dade Public Libraries and Oolite Arts, where she guest-curated exhibitions. Ms. Galpin says she remains committed to researching the artists who live and work in this region.

“One thing I am really excited for us is to welcome people back to the Freedom Tower, for them to experience these new exhibitions, and for all of our community to reflect on the history of the Freedom Tower. For some, that history is so personal, and for some, it’ll be new,” she added. “This is an extraordinary year, with the centennial, with the reopening of the Freedom Tower, which is a space that can symbolize hope, opportunity, and it’s a way to honor personal histories and elevating the experience of many Miamians through art, dialog and design.”

Dr. Galpin spoke with Miami Today reporter Abraham Galvan.
