Chicago Police Shoot Man to Death Inside Assisted Living Center

The Chicago police issued preliminary details after a fatal officer-involved shooting took place early Monday morning inside an assisted living center in the city’s Grand Crossing neighborhood.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. at the Grand Regency of Jackson Park, located at 1448 E. 75th Street. According to its website, the Grand Regency is a supportive living facility that serves adults ages 22 to 64 with physical disabilities who require assistance to live independently.

Police Response and Shooting

Police report officers responded to the complex after being alerted to a knife-carrying man threatening other residents. Upon arriving, officers found the man’s apartment and attempted contact.

According to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department, upon entering the unit, the officers were confronted by the occupant, who was wielding a knife. The officers deployed their Tasers, but the weapons failed to immobilize the man, who continued to advance on them while still holding the knife.

Officers subsequently opened fire and shot the man. He died on the scene. Police confirmed that a knife was seized as evidence from the unit.

Investigation Underway

By 6 a.m., the area remained active, with numerous police vehicles, ambulances, and a CPD detective van parked outside the building. Officers and investigators were observed entering and exiting the building.

Police confirmed that no officers were injured in the incident. The body camera footage is being reviewed as part of the investigation.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), which manages all police use of deadly force cases, was also on the scene.

No further information has been released by the authorities, and the investigation is ongoing.
